NOMEX® COLLECTION:
Video, testing NOMEX in the toughest conditions.
WHAT IS NOMEX®:
Nomex® is a registered trademark for flame-resistant meta-aramid material developed in the early 1960s by DuPont and first marketed in 1967. Nomex®is related to nylon, but have aromatic backbones, and hence are more rigid and more durable.
NOMEX® TECHNOLOGY:
Nomex® is a revolutionary, heat- and flame-resistant fiber that reacts in an emergency. When exposed to extreme heat, Nomex® undergoes a special reaction, changing its properties to capture more energy in the fabric, helping to give the wearer valuable extra seconds of protection from heat transfer. The thick woven structure of synthetic fibers is a very poor conductor of heat. It takes time for heat to travel through Nomex; hopefully by that time, you're away from the flames and out of danger. Nomex® ignites much more slowly than regular cotton, after about 4 seconds and stops burning after a mere 5 seconds when the flame is removed.
LIFESPAN:
Heat and flame protection is inherent to the Nomex® fiber—it can’t be washed or worn away.
HOW ISNOMEX® TEcHNOLOGy DIFFERENT FROM OTHER HEAT AND FLAME management TECHNOLOGIES:
The difference is especially in material, which is more rigid and more durable. Inherently flame resistant fibers are materials that have flame resistance built into their chemical structures. The actual structure of the Nomex® fiber itself is not flammable. For inherently flame resistant fibers, the protection is built into the fiber itself and can never be worn away or washed out.
